Mission

For over 170 years, the Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) Group has been providing the maritime industry with innovative industrial solutions tailored to their needs, along with integrated services ranging from ship design and management to maritime operations in transport, logistics, submarine cables, and renewable energy. LDA is a French family-owned group, present worldwide with more than 3,000 employees and approximately 100 vessels. As part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport activities, LDA is a pioneer in the use of wind propulsion on commercial vessels and has conducted several trials across its fleet. LDA has also recently launched the construction of three ro-ro ships, each equipped with six Flettner rotors. This installation will be a world-first, and many uncertainties remain regarding the ship’s behavior, performance predictions, and adjustments required to optimize the combined thrust of the rotors while minimizing interference and maintaining the overall performance of the ship (fuel consumption minimization).

Within the Projects and Innovation team, the intern will analyze data collected from LDA fleet vessels equipped with wind-assist systems, drawing insights about the chosen technologies and supporting design decisions for future vessels.

The Intern’s Responsibilities:

  • Review the studies, trials, and available data.
  • Define relevant indicators to create from this data and establish the methodology for calculating them.
  • Lead and be the point of contact for studies and trials aimed at determining:
    • The coupling between the aerodynamic forces developed by the Flettner rotors and the hydrodynamic effects on the ship.
    • The optimal adjustment of all six rotors depending on wind conditions and these couplings.
  • Lead and be the point of contact for studies evaluating the optimal adjustments for other ship configurations or wind propulsion technologies.
  • Lead and be the point of contact for studies evaluating expected fuel savings and greenhouse gas emissions reductions through voyage simulations.
  • Develop a tool to visualize the effects of adjustments and various configurations being studied.
  • Prepare a summary report for management, commercial, and technical departments.

The intern will be responsible for deepening the department’s technical knowledge on wind-assist technology and will participate in the technical evaluations of available market solutions with other relevant departments for construction or retrofit projects.
